相傳,佛陀成道之初,不欲說法,獨處宴坐之際而作是念:
The legend has it that right after the Buddha had become fully enlightened, he was alone in seclusion, a reflection arose in his mind thus:
「我今已獲此法,甚深難解、難知,永寂休息,微妙最上,智者能知,非愚者所習……。我今欲說法,餘人不知,則於我唐勞疲苦耳。」
“This Dhamma that I have discovered is deep, hard to see, hard to understand, tranquil and sublime, to be experienced by the wise, could not be understood by the deluded… If I were to teach the Dhamma and if others would not understand me, that would be wearisome for me”.
此時,梵天王於梵天上,遙知如來⼼中所念,不忍如來所證妙法不為世間所聞,以極快的速度,現於佛前,勸請佛陀開示正法:
Then the Brahmā, having known with his own mind the reflection in the Blessed One’s mind, felt it would be a real lost to the world if this sublime Dhamma was not taught, he appeared before the Buddha, and besought the Buddha to teach the Dhamma:
「唯願如來說法,唯願善逝說法。世間眾生,亦有垢薄、智慧聰明、易度者能滅不善法、成就善法。」
“Let the Blessed One teach the Dhamma; let the Fortunate One teach the Dhamma. There are beings with little dust in their eyes who are wise and smart, they will eradicate the unwholesomeness and accomplish the wholesomeness.”
在梵天王的勸請下,佛陀答應為世間「開甘露門」,而梵天請轉法輪這一典故,也成為了千古佳話,在佛教界源遠流長。
Under the request of the Brahmā, the Buddha agreed to “open the doors to the Deathless”. And the Brahmā’s request on the Buddha to turn on the wheel of Dhamma has been a long-lasting aspiration to many Buddhists.
這四講的開示中,阿闍梨將從《四分律律》之「受戒揵度」,相應部(SN 6.1)《梵天勸請經》,及《增壹阿含經》卷10「勸請品第十九」來重現這段傳奇。
In this four Dhamma talks, Acariya will recount this beautiful story from multiple sources, including Pabbajja Khandhaka in Dharmagupta-vinaya, Sutta 6.1 Brahmā’s Request in Saṃyutta Nikāya, and Ekottara-agama (vol.10, the Request).
